You'd think Louisville would be too exhausted for another drinking holiday this soon after Derby. Last year, the stars aligned so Cinco de Mayo fell on the first Saturday in May. Tequila and Bourbon fought it out on the brave battlefield of stomachs across the city as people tried to celebrate two holidays in one day. This year, the four days of distance is just enough to make people question those hungover vows to never drink again.
For those of you who didn't watch Sesame Street growing up, "Cinco de Mayo" actually translates to "Fifth of May" and not "Hold the Mayonaise." In celebration of the Mexican army's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, people in America now drink Tequila. Don't take it personally. In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, people in America drink Guinness. In celebration of Chinese New Year we drink Tsingtao. In celebration of Oktoberfest, it's Hofbrau. Americans celebrate the holidays of other nations by setting aside a day to consume that country's alcohol.
Therefore, here in town you'll find all the Tequila you probably shouldn't drink on Fourth Street Live. Every other bar in town is guaranteed to have Tequila and Margarita specials. The Beer Store on East Market Street is mixing it up with Taco's on the back patio and Cerveza instead of Tequila. Vernon Lanes, a historic yet hipster bowling alley on the fringes of downtown, is hosting a Cinco de Mayo party starting at 10 tonight. (We may love drinking on other people's national holidays, but not enough to cancel regular league bowling.) As embarassed as I am to write this, the Qdoba on Bardstown Road will be packed all night long.
