For those of you who may still be in the dark concerning Forecastle, it all began in 2002 when musician-turned-event producer, JK McKnight, put together a small music festival in Tyler Park and was encouraged by its success. With its roots firmly planted in the camaraderie of like-minded folks, the festival has evolved into a colloquium of equally proportioned parts music, art, and activism. Since it’s start McKnight’s vision has transformed into what SPIN magazine has hailed as “one of the top 101 things to do in America.”
The idea of Halfway to Forecastle is to “get people energized about the 2008 festival while celebrating the past, present, and future of the event,” says McKnight. While the music line-up is impressive, boasting Band of Horses who are currently riding what might be more than just a wave of popularity, as well as native sons VHS or Beta, and more than five other acts-the Halfway Fest will mirror the format for Forecastle in that it won’t be just a rock concert. At least eight locally significant environmental organizations will be will be present, including Ohio Valley Creative Energy and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, giving attendees the opportunity to get involved for the sake of the issues they are passionate about.
Another aspect of the mini-fest is the fact that it will act as a benefit for Louisville BMX biker Jimmy Levan who requires rehabilitation after a serious skateboarding accident. “When we heard of Jimmy’s accident we decided we wanted to make it [fundraising] a more collaborative effort,” explained McKnight. As a nod to Levan, an outdoor skate area where local and regional athletes will perform will add to the festivities. To complete the multi-faceted event, there will be a silent auction inside the venue where all proceeds will benefit Levan. If the Halfway to Forecastle Festival is half as popular as the main event in the summer, halfway to the halfway fest might just give us another reason to celebrate.
