Margaret Atwood, author of such lauded books as The Handmaid’s Tale and The Blind Assassin, delivered a series of lectures at Cambridge University on writing. These lectures were compiled into a book entitled Negotiations with the Dead. It is a fantastic resource for writers active or aspiring, or even just for people who love to read and want to know more about the writing craft. One of the lectures talks about the relationship between the reader and the writer, and it’s heady stuff. One of the points she makes is that the reader should not make the mistake of implicitly associating an author’s work with the author him/herself.
However, there is something appealing about getting to experience first-hand the source from which art springs, and it is for this reason that you would do well to head to The Bard’s Town tonight, December 12, for this month’s installation of the InKY Reading Series, presented by Louisville Literary Arts on the second Friday of every month. Tonight’s event features three writers:
+Makalani Bandele, a Cave Canem fellow and member of the Affrilachian poets. His work can be found in numerous literary publications, as well as in his book Hellfightin’. Bandele will be sharing his poetry.
+Martha Greenwald, winner of the 2010 Mississippi Review Poetry Series. She is currently working on a memoir entitled Shivah Bullies and a collection of short fiction, Well, Bless His Heart. Greenwald will be reading from her fiction.
+Marie Coma, a meditation enthusiast who, along with writing, also paints and teaches yoga. Coma will be reading poetry.
The night will begin at 7:00 with open mic readings, so if you have work you’re dying to share with the community, arrive by 6:45 for signups. The scheduled authors will begin reading at 7:30.
