    Bit to Do

Get Your Geek on at Wonderfest

Watch a teen or high school movie from the 1970s and ‘80s – and into the ‘90s – and one thing is abundantly clear: if you were living in that time, you do not want to be a geek or a nerd. If you were, you were likely gangly and awkward, wearing glasses and weird clothes, hung out with other strange people, and had no hope of a sex life. This is according to the movies, of course – stereotypes were certainly exaggerated – but such generalizations exist no more. Geek is in. (Check out the excellent documentary We Live in Public, by the way, which discusses at one point the advent of the internet and its role in making nerdiness cool and profitable.)

So, for the many many people who no longer need to worry about getting teased for being a fan of stereotypically nerdy media, film, comics, and modeling: this weekend is for you, as Wonderfest returns yet again to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Along with model displays and contests and collectibles for sale, you can meet all sorts of actors and industry professionals, including Victoria Price and Sara Karloff (daughters of Vincent and Boris, respectively), Marta Kristen from Lost in Space, Eric Chu from Galactica and Firestorm, Jeff Gaither (who has created art for The Misfits), the cast and crew of Star Trek: New Voyages, and Greg Nicotero, director and make-up artist for The Walking Dead – just to name a very few.

Wonderfest is this Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31. Admission is $25 per day, or $33 for the whole weekend. The Crowne Plaza Hotel is located next to the airport at 830 Phillips Lane. Complete details for the event can be found at the Wonderfest website.

    About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
