Art Auction 2005 - It's About the Art presented by The Louisville Visual Art Association and the University of Louisville Allen R. Hite Art Institute On Friday October 21, 2005 at Louisville's Slugger Field the Louisville Visual Art Association teams up with the University of Louisville Allen R. Hite Art Institute to present the annual Art Auction. In its 42nd year, the Art Auction continues to benefit art education programs for the two organizations. The Art Auction represents this community's most prominent and long-standing fundraiser for art education. The money raised at the Art Auction supports the Louisville Visual Art Association's Children's Free Art Classes; it also helps fund the Mary Spencer Nay scholarships for art students at the University of Louisville. Well known Kentuckiana artists, professors, and art instructors (including a number of former students in the Free Art or U of L classes) donate many of the pieces available for both the live and silent auctions taking place throughout the evening.
The theme of this year's auction is It's About the ART. Over a hundred and seventy-five works of art will be offered. As a new feature, well-known artists and art patrons have picked work by emerging or new artists to the community to spotlight as individuals to collect. When renowned Danville glass artist Stephen Powell, a contributor to past auctions, recommends the work of Patrick Martin, glass collectors take notice. Likewise, well-respected potter Sara Fredrick's recommendation of up and coming Louisville artist Cynthia Reynolds creates a stir among the local pottery and ceramics aficionados. Long-standing corporate supporters of the arts also shine a spotlight, in particular, on painter Kenneth Hayden, whose work was recommended by Lois Mateus of Brown Forman. Art patrons and collectors share their passions as well. Shelly Zegart, president of the Alliance for American Quilts, recommends Louisville fiber artist Denise Furnish.
