Bit to Do

The Brown-Forman Kidney Walk, which took place at Waterfront Park on Sunday, hosted approximately 1,000 participants and raised over $130,000. Proceeds will be used by The National Kidney Foundation to deliver programs and services to the community, and to educate individuals on the importance of early detection. 

This year’s event was chaired by Rob and Karen Waddell, strong supporters of the cause after Rob, a 13-year employee of Brown-Forman, was diagnosed with Kidney Disease and received a kidney transplant from his neighbor. (Read Rob and Karen’s story here.)

According to April Enix, Director of Development at The National Kidney Foundation, the Rob’s team from Brown-Forman exceeded their own expectations with 95 team members and a fundraising total of $12,906. In addition, Karen's team of friends and family (a.k.a. “The Kidney Beans”) had 35 team members and raised $3,750. Together, they raised over $20,000 after including additional funds from a few other fundraisers.

Adding to the excitement of the day, the volunteer scheduled to be the event mascot was unable to attend at the last minute, so Rob and Karen’s son, Christian, assumed the role. 

“He was an awesome “Captain Kidney” and totally rocked the Mascot Dance Competition,” said April. The picture above features Christian as “Captain Kidney” with “Buddy the Bat.”

Though the Kidney Walk has ended, the support for early detection and treatment continues. Rob and Karen are committed to spreading the word about becoming a living donor (or to “share your spare.”) They also recommend signing the back of your license to become an organ donor.
