    Fun Apps for Derby Day
    Print this page

Whether we are spending Derby Day at Churchill Downs, at a Derby party, at work or way the heck out of town, apps now let us add another dimension to race day. Download one or all of these apps so you’ll have any info you may need at your fingertips.

Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby 2014 app combines the basics you’ll need if you’re attending the races – parking, gates, ticketing, routes to the Downs, and times – with fun and games to keep you occupied. It’s got more info on the horses than most of us will have the attention span to consume, and clear explanations on betting and terminology. Play Derby trivia, mess around with Derby hat pics to share, and brush up on the lyrics to “My Old Kentucky Home.” (When the camera lands on you, don’t be the one obviously pretending you know the words. Let that be the other guy.) For iPhone and iPad.

Insider and trainer Kenny McPeek’s app, Horse Races Now, is more for the serious race fan. With info on horse racing all over the U.S. and the world, this app is a goldmine for those who want to do multi-faceted research. (If you pick your horses by name and jockey jersey color, maybe pick another app.)  Live race video, race replays, workout info and stats on all the horses, jockeys and trainers are all in one place. For Apple and Android.

The Kentucky Derby Festival app puts the context around the most exciting two minutes in sports. Keep track of where, when and what you want to attend in the schedule. Use the maps to figure out where you’re going and where the bathroom is when you get there. You’ll also find info on weather and other changes, which may come into play this week. For Apple and Android.

    About Kachina Shaw

A transplanted Hawkeye, I've now lived in Louisville longer than any other city. Can't live without: my husband and fur babies, coal-black coffee, peanut M&Ms, sunflowers, monthly vacations, books, walking paths, massage and a big purse.
