The Kentucky Autism Training Center presents Mark Osteen author of One of Us: A Family's Life with Autism
In this workshop Mark Osteen will address relationships between fathers and their children with autism. Osteen begins by reading a chapter from his recent book. Entitled “The Play of Shadows,” it recounts he and his wife’s efforts to teach their son Cameron, who has autism, how to ride a bicycle, play baseball, and learn music; the excerpt also reveals how a father, understandably hoping his son will share his own passions, may not see his child for who he/she really is or understand his/her needs.
Osteen also discusses his own struggle to deal with the anger and embarrassment that many parents feel when they take their unusual child out in public, and the frustration and sadness they feel when they can’t “make” their child get better. Osteen offers suggestions for maintaining balance and sanity in the midst of trauma. Finally, he shows how fathers (and all parents) should not just teach their child with autism, but also listen to and learn from them how to better communicate non-verbally, how to live in the moment and how to improvise.
