The Frankfort Ave/Crescent Hill area is a place full of galleries, eateries, bars and coffee shops.
At one time or another, you’ve heard a great restaurant review or a really neat store that only this area has.  Known for its appeal of everything within walking distance, this part of Louisville has a little something for everyone.

As Tina Ward-Pugh, District 9 representative tells Louisville.com, this area can be described in one word: neighborly.  At the beginning, during and at the /files/storyimages/of each day, folks in Crescent Hill and Clifton are all about being good neighbors to each other.  Folks actually speak to others on the street, on the sidewalks as they are walking their dogs, strolling their kids, and sipping some good coffee at one of the great coffee shops on Frankfort Avenue”

Strolling in this district can take you anywhere from the galleries at Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center to some New Orleans’ flavored cuisine at Cafe Lou Lou, all the way to a great cup of coffee and music at Caffe Classico.  The Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop (or FAT) showcases each of these locations and more along its route on the final Friday of every month.  You can see the schedule, sponsors and map at www.fatfridayhop.org.

Keeping the area pedestrian-friendly and promoting people staying active and being outdoors is a main priority along this corridor.  As Ward-Pugh says “I'm excited about a number of things coming to the 9th District.  We will break ground in the spring to build a sidewalk along Brownsboro Road across from the Clifton Kroger and connect it from N. Ewing all the way to Story Avenue ($400,000 project 8 years in the making).  A sidewalk will be built along the remaining stretch of Mellwood to Zorn Avenue to complete the walking loop in the neighborhood.  And a walking path will be added along Alta Vista Road from Lexington Road to Seneca and Cherokee Parks for better access for pedestrians to the parks.”

The new Clifton Lofts have been a welcomed addition to the housing in the area as it boasts 42 loft-style units,
rooftop terrace, treed courtyard and fitness room.  It is just seconds from Osaka Sushi, Ray Parellas Italian Cuisine and the Irish Rover.  Just steps away you will also find one of the newest restaurant neighbors to the area, Varanese.

If you’re looking for some great Italian food, we suggest Porcini or Volare’.  If Mexican is what your taste buds are craving, be sure to stop by El Mundo and try some of their unique dishes.  But, if what you’re searching for is some good old American cuisine, you’ve gotta try Clifton’s Pizza or North End Cafe.

Be sure to check out the unique shopping of Mona & Lisa, Just Creations or the consignments of Eyedia for one-of-a-kind gifts.  Or, if you’re out for a stroll, be sure to check out all of the galleries along Frankfort Avenue such as Blue Velvet, Crescent Hill Gallery and
    Kaviar Forge & Gallery.

Ward-Pugh goes on to say “You absolutely can't miss strolling down Frankfort Avenue for coffee, food or shopping.  Spending a day at the Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center and touring the Kentuckiana Girl Scouts Headquarters on Lexington Road in Irish Hill.  And how could anyone miss out on enjoying both Seneca and Cherokee Parks, and especially taking the dog to the Dog Run in Cherokee Park.”

If we had our say in the matter:

Best Game of Pool: Dark Star Tavern
Best Bourbon In Town: Bourbon's Bistro
A Great Piece: Clifton's Pizza or Bearno's Pizza
A Cup of Joe: Heine Brother's or Caffe Classico
    Great Dive: Longshot Tavern
    Fancy Pants: Porcini's or Varanese
A Bottle Of Wine: Volare' or L&N Wine Bar & Bistro (Mellwood Ave)

In this historic neighborhood, anything you'd want to do is just a few steps away.  So, park your car and make your own list of favorite things along Frankfort Avenue!
