A regional artist, Wendi Smith has been showing her work since 1975.
Primarily a painter, she also adds assemblage and collage, some textiles,
and sculptural elements to her work with the image. Her ecclectic approach
is always evolving, and the result is a mix of subjects and techniques.
Two central themes connect her work. The first is the idea of the image as
object. To change the expected two dimensional surface of a painting to
include three dimensions is a major interest.
The second is the concept of ritual and the historic roots of visual art in
the expression of the unseen, as offering, ceremony or prayer. Smith mines
other cultures and ages and integrates her own concepts into interpretive
objects.
The formal aspects of her work include attention to surface, color, pattern,
and elaboration, as well as the image as symbol.
Smith taught full time for several years at Bellarmine College, and is
currently an adjunct faculty member at IUS. She is a member and current
co-director at Zephyr Gallery in Louisville. She has shown her work at
various venues in the region, including the Carnegie Center for the Arts in
Cincinnati, The Four Star Gallery in Indianapolis, and the Midwest Museum of
American Art in Elkhart, Indiana. Her lastest work will be on exhibit at
Zephyr Gallery in February 2009.
