Bring your child to Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and discover how wildlife and plants spend the winter. Learn how you can help them survive the season and why their survival is important to your own survival. Visit free, informal Discovery Stations at the Visitor Center where naturalists will interpret various aspects of the life of the winter landscape and reveal clues you can use to explore and enjoy all natural habitat in winter – here at Bernheim or in your own backyard.
Enjoy a free, self-guided visual scavenger hunt at the Sun and Shade loop to find six "stars" of the winter landscape. These woody plants have showy winter form; bark, fruit and flowers. All "stars" are marked and you can pick up your checklist and "star bio" at the Visitor Center. All of these plants are suitable for urban and suburban landscapes.
At 2:00 p.m., your family can participate in a guided nature walk on the Two Ponds Loop behind the Visitor Center. This loop passes through Bernheim's stunning Hubbuch Holly Collection and your nature guide will share the legend and lore of these additional "stars" of the winter garden. The fee for this guided program is $3 per family for members; $5 per family for non-members.
