Teach Kentucky, an innovative teacher recruitment program, will be the beneficiary of January 12, 2009 Monday FUND Days at O’Shea’s, Flanagan’s and Brendan’s, Louisville’s Irish Pubs.
Just eat or enjoy a pint at any of these three locations and 100% of proceeds will help support Teach Kentucky. Teach Kentucky recruits high achieving college graduates to teach in the Kentucky Public School System, especially in high need areas.
Teach Kentucky is working to make a difference in the Louisville metro area by bringing in the best new teachers available. According to founder Rowan Claypool, “our effort is to bring folks who wouldn’t otherwise come to Kentucky, to come teach and use their energy and expertise in our public school system.”
The program is sponsored by local alumni from Centre, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory, Harvard, Middlebury, Northwestern, Princeton, Smith, University of the South, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt, Washington & Lee and Yale. Teachers are helped with free transitional housing, relocation incentives, intense training, in-state tuition eligibility for Masters in Teaching programs, alumni connections and dedicated mentor support in the first year.
Teach Kentucky is in partnership with the University of Louisville and the school systems in Jefferson, Shelby, Henry and Spencer Counties. To date, Teach Kentucky has brought 46 teachers to the area to work at 25 different schools. A new group of recruits will be in Louisville in late January for interviews for the 2009-2010 school year.
The O’Shea’s family of Pubs started Monday Fund Days as a way to cultivate community in Louisville. On these days, all proceeds go to deserving non-profits nad charities in the Louisville community.
