Donutopias galore at third annual Walk MS Louisville kick off party

Saturday morning, nine teams and their friends and family came together for a good cause at the third annual Walk MS Louisville Kick Off Party, held this year at Drinkswell at 1201 Story Ave., which is also the location of the Kentucky-Southeast Indiana chapter of the National MS Society. Each team competed for prizes by building their own donutopias from a combination of coffee stir sticks, sugar sprinkles, plastic utensils, and Krispy Kreme donuts, which were also served throughout the morning. WAVE-TV personality Dawn Gee emceed the event, which took place at the end of MS Awareness Week.

At around 10 a.m., the teams each grabbed their allotted two dozen of the famous fried donuts and other building supplies, and began work upon their creations within the 30-minute time limit. Amid the chaos, a team of judges – yours truly among them – worked through and around each table, judging each entrant’s creation in categories such as “Tallest Creation,” “Best Use of Branding,” and “Most Creative.” After the 30 minutes ran out, the judges held a confab to decide the winners in each category prior to joining everyone for a stack of pancakes, sausage, and either Tang or beer from Chris Cakes of Indiana. And of course, more donuts plus coffee and coupons provided by Heine Brothers' Coffee.

When the crowd settled, Gee read out the list of winners as determined by the judging committee, with prizes ranging from orange flowers in square vases, to cows from Chik-Fil-a. Cyclists from Bike MS also rode in for the kick off party to meet and greet with all in attendance.

The next Walk MS Louisville event will take place at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in mid-May. The Bike MS event will take place in late June as a two-day ride beginning and ending in Shelbyville.
