Gallery Hertz provides the artistic vision that has helped define artist, sculptures, painters and photographers from around the world. Richard Bram gathered the work of twenty-nine photographers, The WHO"S WHO of Street Photographers, in an international showing, and exhibited their art this past weekend at one of Louisville’s premier cultural hot-spots of the region.
The Hertz family bought the 1911 historic Shelby Park vaudeville theater and renovated it turning it into Gallery Hertz in 1995. The Gallery features a garden with outdoor sculptures, and the Gallery contains contemporary art, photography, paintings, sculptures and mixed media. Some of the artist include Tom Bartel, Richard Bram, Emily Church, Michelle Feulner-Castro, Brad Devlin, Billy Hertz, Ray Kleinhelter, Tom Pfannerstill, Russ Vogt and Silvia Wilkens.
Distant Streets is more about the photographers than the photography. It is about the millions of photographers out there every day. Distant Streets honors the photographers, professional and amateur, who take that average picture of their friend, family, child, pet and the unusual street happening. It puts you at the scene of the event, at the “you would have had to been there” moment.
One of these photos caught my eye and while it wasn’t titled, I called it “The Road to No Where” and the photo is featured in the article. It shows how a play on visionary art can fool the eye.
While at Gallery Hertz I met photographer Louisville artist Jim Doiron. His photography of street art is wonderfully mathematical in design. They are photographs of cracks in streets, sidewalks, building floors, asymmetrical in design and Mr. Doiron says,” shapes, patterns, textures and fissures of architectural fissures fascinate him. ” Billy Hertz says of Jim Doiron, “Known primarily for his "minimal mixed-media works”, Jim brings that same sensibility in his photographic debut here at the gallery, showing the same keen eye for beauty in the small details & compositions. ” Mr. Doiron works in the Art Department for the Weber Group who is known for specialty fabrication and had a park in creating the Great Wolf Lodge Water Parks.
Billy Hertz introduced me to Joe Autry. Joe is a sculpture that is opening a sculpture studio (Open Air Sculpture Studio) that will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday October 29th, 2011 at 3816 Bishops Ln. from 11am to 7pm. Mr. Autry has been to Siberia recently to study ice sculpting. I look forward to attending this opening and will keep you up to date on the event.
