DISCARDED
by Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova
Presented by Land of Tomorrow, Lexington
February 18 – March 18, 2011
Opening reception on February 18 @ 7pm
Land of tomorrow is pleased to present DISCARDED, an exhibition by Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova. The exhibition will open on the 18th of February at the Lexington space with a reception at 7pm. DISCARDED, the exhibition, is the result of a yearlong project by the same name.
Gohde and Todorova spent the past twelve months documenting pieces of furniture they found on curbs throughout Lexington, KY. For each couch or chair the artists found, they asked its owner, or when the owners were not available, a neighbor, to sit for a portrait. For each photograph, they wrote down the time, date, temperature, and the reason the piece of furniture was being discarded. The result is nearly 300 photographs that allow a glimpse into the lives of our neighbors.
The exhibit includes all the photographs, as well as the stories collected from the owners, and poetry created in response to the images: displayed using a four-channel video. The video is accompanied by a song that was written by a Washington DC songwriter with local roots, Vandaveer, specifically for the work. The installation includes pieces of discarded furniture and floor-to-ceiling wall drawings depicting the places where the furniture was found. The setting affords the viewer a photo opportunity akin to that in the Magic Kingdom, where Mickey Mouse has been replaced by tattered pieces of furniture.
Poetry written by: Martha Gehringer, Jeremy Paden, Bianca Spriggs, Eric Sutherland, and Richard Taylor
The exhibition will run through the 18th of March and will be open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2-4 or by appointment. For further information please contact Angela Torchio at angela@landoftomorrow.org or visit the website www.landoftomorrow.org.
