It typically takes about 350 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers to cover an average Saturday of live racing at Churchill Downs, but not on the first Saturday in May. It takes a village to bring the Kentucky Derby experience to the fans both on and off the track.
On average, 11,500 people will work at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day. This includes over 2,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers, plus vendors and outside employment agencies. In addition, 2,000 media credentials are issued to the sports writers, broadcasters and photographers who will provide the Derby coverage to those away from the racetrack.
