This workshop will familiarize students with techniques to create 3D, clay tiles in high relief. We will begin with a sketching session to develop an idea based on a story or myth of the student’s choice. We will create patterns and build up a base and finish with carving and surface design. Underglaze slips will be provided to add coloration. The tiles will be finish fired for students and will be ready for pick up at a later date.
John McCarthy is an artist, ceramic sculptor and art educator. He has worked in all mediums of art with an emphasis on ceramics, where he creates both functional and sculptural works. His unusual pieces are often hand-built, with some begun on the wheel, and all highly manipulated to create organic shapes with an emphasis on texture and subtle, naturally glazed surfaces. McCarthy has used salt-fired and electric kiln firings to produce one-of-kind compositions that are striking and durable, whether used indoors or as exterior garden sculpture. McCarthy has exhibited in numerous regional exhibitions including: The Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville, the Speed Museum, Indiana University Southeast, Carnegie Center for the Arts and History, Evansville Art Museum and the Louisville Visual Art Assoc., at the Water Tower. His sculptures are owned by private collectors across the country.
