Sena Jeter Naslund will visit The Filson Historical Society to
discuss her national bestseller, Four Spirits: A Novel About
the Civil Rights Movement. The book follows 22-year-old
Stella Silver, an "idealistic young college student raised
by her genteel aunts." Though initially keeping her
distance, Stella becomes involved in events occuring in
1963 in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. These
events sweep her into the civil rights movement as Stella
becomes more and more appalled by the tragedies of her time.
Naslund's novel "weaves together the lives of blacks and whites,
racists and civil rights advocates, and the events of peaceful
protest and violent repression to create both an intimate and
epic tapestry of American social transformation." These "four
spirits" referred to in the title represent four young girls killed in
the bombing of a Birmingham African American church carried
out by Ku Klux Klan members.
Naslund will be available for book signings
following the lecture with copies of the book
available for purchase.
There is no cost for this event though reservations are requested.
