    About Mayor Jerry Abramson:
As the longest-serving mayor in the history of Louisville and, now, as the first mayor of the merged city-county government, Jerry E. Abramson believes that public service is the best way to give back to the hometown he loves.

In less than two years as Mayor of Louisville Metro, Abramson has fundamentally restructured government, proclaiming that that we must “do more with less,” while working to bring the community together. Among his initiatives, Abramson has led efforts to:

    • Reduce the size of government by more than 10 percent while improving the delivery of basic services in key areas – all without raising taxes
    • Improve safety with a $70 million commitment to create MetroSafe – an emergency communications network that will, for the first time, link all of the community’s emergency responders
    • Put more police officers on the street and in the community’s neighborhoods than ever before and provide the tools they need to protect citizens
    • Solve the most pressing drainage problems in the community with a $70 million initiative to tackle 350 neighborhood drainage projects within three years.
    • Continue a 15-year renaissance in downtown with construction underway on more than $500 million in economic development projects, and begin an ambitious effort to focus on economic redevelopment along major roadways throughout our community.

In 2003, Abramson was named one of the “Public Officials of the Year” by Governing magazine for his success with the largest municipal merger in 30 years. This year, Abramson was named Kentucky’s best civic leader or politician for the fourth time by Kentucky Monthly magazine.

Previously, Abramson was the only person to have served three terms as Mayor of the City of Louisville. His tenure as mayor from 1985-1998 was marked by historic growth and economic progress in Louisville. In 13 years as Mayor of Louisville, Abramson led the $700 million expansion of Louisville International Airport, revitalized the city’s waterfront with the creation of Waterfront Park and expanded the local economy by recruiting the international headquarters for Tricon Global Restaurants, Presbyterian Church (USA) and UPS Air Hub 2000.
