Tomorrow morning holds some excitement for me. Maybe its silly. No: it's definitely silly. But I have a tradition, and it's a good tradition, and I look forward to it all year. Tomorrow morning the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards will be announced. Now, the Oscars are just a whole lot of overblown hype – the writing for the ceremony is bad, the jokes are cheesy, the good films often get shafted, and the ones which do win are often the result of politics and who is “due” rather than who actually deserves it. It's ridiculous – which makes it perfect for a drinking game, which I will be hosting with a select few of my friends for the fourth year in a row. I take this whole thing very seriously. It's a big deal in my household. I can't wait.
We need a segue here to the main point; we are, after all, going to be talking about a multiple-Oscar winner: the 1976 Best Picture winner Rocky
, which also won awards for Best Director and Best Editing, as well as receiving seven other nominations. Sylvester Stallone, in perhaps his most iconic role, is Rocky, a small-time fighter with great skill, who gets a chance to fight against heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. It is generally agreed to be a Great Film – but did it deserve to beat out fellow nominees
Network
and
Taxi Driver
for the coveted Best Picture Oscar? This writer thinks not – but that is just one man's opinion.
