    The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library is hosting the following free events that are open to the public.  No registration is required.  A reception with light refreshments will follow each program.

    February 1, 2008 – February 29, 2008
    Black History Month Essay Contest: Why Do You Think We Should Celebrate Black History Month?
    Students who live or att/files/storyimages/school in Floyd County in grades 3 – 12 are invited to participate in this essay contest.  Essays will be judged on both personal insights and evidence of research.  Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony to be announced at a later date.  First place for grades 3 -5 and 6 – 9 will receive $50; second place for grades 3 – 5 and 6 – 9 will receive $25.  First place for grades 10 – 12 will receive $100; second place for grades 10 – 12 will receive $50.  Essays will be displayed throughout the library, and winning essays will be read at a ceremony.

    Privately-Owned African  American Cemeteries Presentation
    Hundreds of unmarked black graves lie in Floyd County, Indiana.  Shirley Wolf, past President of Southern Indiana Genealogical Society will show and discuss fascinating findings of her personal research.  This program is sponsored by the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society.

    Wellness Fair:  A Healthier You
    The Floyd County Health Department will have information pamphlets on a variety of health topics.  Norton Health Care representatives will be available for blood pressure screenings and body fat analysis.  Chiropractic Worx will also be offering information and chair massages.  Many “health and wellness” displays regarding prevention and nutrition will be showcased at this informative event.



    Tuesday, February 19, 2008; 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
    The Importance of Music in the Black Church
    Kevin B. James,  a nationally recognized musician, arranger, songwriter, director and music minister at St. Stephens Baptist Church in Louisville will discuss the important role that music has played throughout history in the black church.  There will be a discussion after his presentation.

    Adrianna Hopkins (WHAS11 reporter), Donna Lacey-Marshall (former WHAS11 reporter), Stephan Johnson (FOX 41 reporter), Chuck Olmstead (WHAS11 reporter) and IUS Faculty member James St. Clair will take part in a panel discussion focusing on the impact of African American Journalist in media and their unique challenges and contributions to journalism and our society.
