What does a girl need in a society where women are held up to standards based on their physical appearances alone?
Author Peggy Hamblin Meriwether provides an answer in The BumbleBee & Me: A Girl's Guide to Self-Esteem Building (100 pp.) This unique approach to self-esteem building contains activity and journal sections providing an opportunity to read, write and reflect. This book encourages girls to believe in themselves and provides steps to accomplish this goal. Low self-esteem attributes to many negative behaviors. This book encourages girls to seek and find their inner and outer beauty and is designed to build high self-esteem, resulting in positive behaviors.
Five years ago, Peggy, Chief Empowerment Officer of BumbleBee Principle, a business designed to motivate youth to achieve, contracted with the Girl Power program through Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. She has presented a program on building self-esteem in several middle schools in Jefferson County. Peggy got the idea to compile her teachings into a book so that the girls would have a chance to read and express themselves through journaling. The book enables the girls to have a reflection tool; something to return to when things were not going just right for them.
As a former classroom teacher, Peggy has had years of experience with the results of low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is prevalent throughout our society. It weaves its way throughout all socio-economic sectors and it affects the very young as well as older women. Fighting her own self-esteem battle also inspired her to write the self-esteem building program. Extremely overweight and challenged by health and injury issues, she realized that she had to work hard to heal her embattled self-esteem. As a Mary Kay Consultant surrounded by tips on self-esteem building, she began working on the inside; proceeded to the outside and managed to lose over 150 pounds to improve her health and well being.
Peggy Hamblin Meriwether is a motivational speaker and presents programs to thousands of girls and boys in classrooms throughout various school systems. She also presents programs in churches, Metro Louisville Youth Development programs, and neighborhood community centers.
