The Speed Art Museum invites you to the premiere of Art After Dark on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (family friendly fun until 9:00 p.m.). Art After Dark is an evening of museum-wide entertainment which allows visitors of all ages to experience a night at the Speed unlike ever before.
Art After Dark: Remix (the first of three museum-wide events held throughout the year, each with a different theme) will tie together a lineup of music, visual spectacle, creating art, and fun. Remix will feature the premiere of a multimedia art collaboration between classically trained American cellist Ben Sollee (an NPR Top 10 Unknown Artist of the Year) and multimedia Louisville artist, Valerie Sullivan Fuchs. Also featured will be the uniquely dynamic, minimalist-informed, yet R&B inspired music of “The For Carnation,” a post rock band from Louisville formed by Brian McMahan (formerly of the legendary band “Slint”), as well as theatrical interpretations of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies created by the wacky minds of LePetomane Theatre Ensemble, and fire dancing performances from The Phoenix Collective on the museum’s front lawn. Visitors will also want to keep an eye out for breakdancers, a critic at large, “un-tours” of the collection by salon kingpin David Harned of Twisted Salon, and films from Louisville Film Society. Seating for musical performances is limited and will be on a first come, first serve basis.
The Louisville Free Public Library will give readings in the galleries for families until 9:00 p.m. before the kiddos are off to bed. Art Sparks will be open until 9:00 p.m.
“With a new expansion on the horizon, we are Changing Speed in terms of our programming. Full of art, music, film, and energy, Art After Dark is an event that will bring people together at the museum to explore their creative sides. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a blast!” said Charles L. Venable, Director and CEO of The Speed Art Museum.
Also available will be complimentary food tastings from Liquor Barn, a cash bar, and specialty Brown-Forman cocktails.
Admission is free for Museum members (including University of Louisville students, faculty and staff), $10 for non-members. Purchase a museum membership at the door for free admission to Art After Dark. Join us for upcoming Art After Dark events on February 5: Fleur and June 11: Shattered.
Art After Dark is sponsored by Brown-Forman with additional support from Liquor Barn.
