    Eat & Swig

I’d been wanting to try breakfast at The Fish House/Cafe Beignet ever since they hung up a sign that said “Beignets Every Day.” Naturally any restaurant serving beignets every day is a fine one that is worthy of my attention. However my deep devotion to Wild Eggs, Toast, the North End Cafe and croissants from my local bread store has kept my breakfast calendar booked up. Finally though a couple weeks ago I had a leisurely Sunday brunch at Cafe Beignet and was nearly compelled to scold myself for having waited so long to eat there.

In a word, or three, my brunch was so, so good. My dining companion and I sampled two kinds of beignets (actually three, the owner was kind enough to throw in one special beignet of the day so we could try it), two kinds of sausage and two kinds of potatoes. Plus I had yummy chicory coffee. Chicory coffee? Where have you been all my life?

Cafe Beignet is an order at the counter, refill your own coffee kind of place. The food was served on plastic plates with plastic utensils and everything was fantastic. The breakfast menu also has toast, eggs and omelets. I imagine all those dishes are wonderful but I can’t imagine ordering anything but cinnamon beignets with little piggies sausages. Well, at least until I give up pork for good. Then maybe I’ll order beignets and eggs. And yes, they’re actually called little piggies sausages. They’re way better than average link sausages. If you want something spicier you can order andouille sausage instead.

Beignets come in original (meaning covered in powder sugar) and cinnamon varieties as well as a special beignet of the day. For my visit the special beignet was lemon poppyseed. It had light lemon flavor to the dough and was coated in a sweet lemon glaze. I’m not much of a lemon poppyseed person but I certainly wouldn’t kick that beignet out of bed.
