Through artifacts and documents, Eric Brooks, curator of Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate in Lexington, Ky., will introduce you to a side of Senator Henry Clay you may not know. Known as the author of the Missouri Compromise, a measure passed by the U.S. Congress to end a crisis concerning the extension of slavery, during his time, he also was known for his temper. In fact, a song of the time, discussed the abundance of Clay’s “sins,” including frequent duels. This program will explore whether his deeds were, indeed, “sinful” or merely the typical pastimes of a Southern gentleman. The lecture is free. (Gallery admission is not included.)
