Lexington’s Ben Sollee is headed back to his home-state and will perform at the Iroquois Park and Amphitheater this Saturday, June 18th for 91.9 WFPK’s “Rock ‘n’ Stroll” event, benefiting Louisville’s public radio stations.

Sollee, who recently released his latest album Inclusions via Louisville’s SonaBLAST! records, is one genre bending cellist whose approach to music blends folk, soul and R&B. In 2007 he was hailed by NPR’s Morning Edition as one of the Top Ten Great Unknown Artists.

Sollee, a staunch advocate of environmental responsibility, has also been a significant voice against the coal mining process of mountain-top removal in the Appalachian region of Kentucky and Virginia. His 2010 release of Dear Companion was recorded in collaboration with Daniel Martin Moore and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and was centrally themed to this controversial process.

Sollee is a dude who likes to practice what he preaches too. He’s been known to ride his bike to and from shows from time to time. In 2009 he traveled over 330 miles from Kentucky to the Bonnaroo music festival with all his gear and cello strapped to his bicycle. Sollee also performed at the 2011 Bonnaroo music festival last week and is set to do another bike tour this summer from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Orlando, Florida.

WFPK Program Director Stacy Owen on Sollee says, “His music, originality and humanity make him the perfect artist for this community event.”

    About Jason Ashcraft

Jason is a life-long Louisville native who grew up in the Highlands, and now resides in an undisclosed fortified location somewhere in Louisville. He's followed Louisville's rock music scene for almost 10 years, first as a concert promoter, then an artist manager, and now a music critic and reviewer. He's one crazy Jarhead who'll literally publish anything his mind conceives on impulse, so don't always expect him to follow the traditional laws of journalism. He has intent of reviving Hunter S. Thompson's “gonzo journalism” if only his editors will allow it...which they don't usually.
