Some solid pitching and timely hitting helped the Louisville Bats sweep Syracuse in a doubleheader Tuesday.

In the first game the Bats tallied three runs in the top of the ninth to down the Chiefs 8-5. In the second game Louisville, thanks to collective 2-hitter from four pitchers, topped Syracuse 6-1.

With the wins over the Chiefs (17-35), the worst team in the International League, the Bats (27-25) moved two games above .500 for the first time all season and moved within 3.5 games of IL West-leading Indianapolis (31-22).

After the first game of the three-game series was rained out Monday the two teams played a doubleheader Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium. Both games were scheduled to be just seven innings, but the Bats had to work overtime to win the opener.

Trailing 3-0 entering the seventh, Louisville rallied for five runs - all with two outs - in the top of the inning. Eugenio Suarez got the Bats’ bats going with a solo home run to left-center field. Later in the inning Louisville would score on Jose Constanza’s RBI-single and a trio of bases-loaded walks.

Although Bats closer Nathan Adcock blew the save, giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, his team didn’t blow the game.

Louisville reliever Sam LeCure scored the winning run, after being walked to start the ninth he plated two batters later on a throwing error by his counterpart (Evan Meek), and picked up the win in relief. The veteran right-hander (2-2) gave up only one hit while walking three and striking out one in two innings.

In the nightcap a quartet of Louisville pitchers - Donovan Hand, Ben Klimesh, Pedro Villarreal and Carlos Contreras - gave up only a pair of hits in the victory. Klimesh (2-0) picked up the victory, allowing just a single and a double while walking three and striking out one in 1 and 2-3 innings.

The Bats’ hurlers got plenty of help at the plate, where Hernan Iribarren, Chris Dominguez and Yorman Rodriguez led Louisville’s 10-hit attack with two apiece.

The Bats close out their seven-game road trip, as well as their three-game set with Syracuse, at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday, when Louisville right-hander Josh Smith (1-2, 3.81 earned run average) is scheduled to take on Chiefs righty Bruce Billings (1-3, 4.10 ERA).

TRANSACTION: Tuesday relief pitcher Nick Christiani was transferred to Billings while infielder Josh Satin was activated from the disabled list.
