The Louisville Bats are in Rochester finishing up a four game series with the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees (huh? Read further for details). Time to get caught up on the team with YOUR Bats Sunday Notebook:

    Empire State Yankees

The Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees, current opponent of the Bats, have been dubbed the Empire State Yankees this season. They’ve earned this nickname because they will be playing all 144 games this season on the road. This is happening because their home stadium, PNC Field, is undergoing reconstruction this season. Gonna be a long summer for former Bats manager Dave Miley and his Yankees.

    Let’s Go Streaking

After winning 9-5 Saturday, the Bats have won two of three for the first time since May 26-28. They’ve not won two straight since May 19-20 and have yet to win three straight this season. On the contrary, the Bats have lost four straight four different times this season and five straight once. They are currently 20-44 overall and have a 3-7 mark in June.

    Offense! (clap, clap) Offense!

The Bats have struggled mightily all season at the dish. They’re hitting .231 overall as a team, good for last in the league. They’re also last in the league in on-base percentage (.300) and second-to-last in slugging percentage (.352). The Bats have scored a total of 226 runs in 64 games, or about three per game.

    Defense! (clap, clap) Defense!

The Bats have been every bit of stellar in the field this season. The Bats lead the league in fielding percentage at .985 and have committed just 35 errors all season—also best in the league. The Bats are the only team in the International League not to commit three errors in a game this season. They’ve played 35 error-free games.

    Gathright this way, please

Joey Gathright’s ten game hitting streak ended Tuesday night after an 0-for-4 night. Joey went 0-for-4 the following night as well. Since then, though, Gathright is 5-for-13 in three games, including a pair of two-hit games. In 15 games since joining the Bats May 24, Gathright is hitting .322 with three doubles and eight RBI.

    Janish getting close

Paul Janish is getting close to returning to the field for the Bats. Janish went on the disabled list May 30 with a fractured left wrist. Before leaving for Syracuse Monday night, Janish was seen walking around the clubhouse without a brace on his wrist and David Bell said Janish was about seven to ten days away from returning. Ten days from  last Monday would mean Janish could return as soon as Thursday when the Bats return home. In 23 games, Janish hit .315 with two home runs, four doubles, one triple, and four RBIs before his injury.

    Negron gets the call

Kristopher Negron was recalled by the Cincinnati Reds on June 6. Negron drew a walk in the seventh inning of the Reds’ 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers Saturday. It was Negron’s first major league plate appearance. In 58 games this season with the Bats, Negron hit .212 with five homers and 16 RBIs. But it’s not his bat that got him the call. Negron is an outstanding defender and human highlight film. Recently, he made this incredible catch against the Syracuse Chiefs on May 28. After the game, David Bell said no matter what position Negron plays, “He’s probably the best player at that position.”

    The Road Ahead

After completing their four game series with the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees Tuesday, the Bats have an off day before returning home for an eight game homestand that includes a four game series against the Rochester Red Wings and a four game series against the Yankees.
