The Art Ecology Gallery located at 224 South Clay Street, Suite 110 is celebrating its first year of operation with an exhibition by co-founder J.B. Wilson. “I’m an American” features 10 digital pieces that will be displayed in light boxes and projections. Wilson, the son of 21c Museum Hotels founder Steve Wilson, considers his art to be the visual communication of complex emotions or truths, and as such, the show will offer visual representations of the title phrase as a statement of truth about the artist. The exhibition opening takes place on Friday, Sept. 4 from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., and the show will be on view at the gallery through Monday, Oct. 26. For more information, call (502) 690-2311.
“In 2009 we are completely saturated with ‘Image in America’-the marketing and branding of the 21st century has altered our culture and social ecology to the point that we define ourselves to one another with product and image instead of physically and emotionally,” says Wilson. “Art communicates on a visceral and emotional level, which is what I love about being an artist, having the ability to convey complex emotions or truths with a visual vocabulary.”
J.B. Wilson studied at the University of Louisville and the Savannah College of Art and Design. He has participated in the Speed Art Museum Summer Program and the Savannah College of Art and Design Rising Star Program. Wilson’s work is in the private collections of Brown-Forman, Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, G. Henry and Auerbach. His work has appeared in exhibitions at the Speed Museum and the Edenside Gallery, and Wilson is a featured artist with the Five 0 Two project, an initiative that promotes local artists in the Louisville area. Wilson is also president of Kentucky Bison Company.
