The Arbor Day Tree Give Away is a signature event for Bernheim. The 2009 Bernheim Eightieth Anniversary celebration makes this Arbor Day event even more special. In the early 1930’s, shortly after Isaac W. Bernheim established Bernheim Forest, over a million trees were planted within the boundaries in preparation for Bernheim’s public opening in 1950. Since that time, Bernheim has championed the public, institutional and corporate planting of trees annually as part of their Arbor Day Celebration. This weekend, visitors can select a tree from a wide variety of Bernheim recommended native trees, including dogwoods and redbuds, as well as Bernheim suggested cultivated varieties of trees suitable for our region. Tree “biographies” and planting instructions are also free.
Although Bernheim has been designated as the “Official Arboretum of the State of Kentucky,” it receives no local, state or federal tax payer dollars. To find out how you can support Bernheim, contact Susan Ritter at 502-955-5812.
