The American Tapestry Alliance is a 25 year old non-profit organization that promotes and supports tapestry weaving. The Biennial is a juried exhibition which highlights the art of some of the best contemporary tapestry weavers from across the globe. The tapestries featured in the exhibition demonstrate the diverse and creative ways in which individual artists successfully integrate contemporary concerns into this venerable medium.
The ATA Biennials bring the best of international contemporary handwoven tapestry into a coherent show. These exhibitions provide opportunities in the field by a) setting high standards of excellence; b) touring across North America; c) triggering articles; and d) publishing a catalogue with critical essays.
The American Tapestry Alliance was founded in 1982 to bring together tapestry weavers throughout North America and has grown to include over 425 members from 24 countries.
The exhibition curator was Susan Warner Keene a Canadian fiber artist, educator and independent writer and curator.
