Actors Theatre continues their season with the provoking tale of Billy, a man who was born deaf into a hearing family, and who has adapted well to his environment over the years, despite his family’s lack of encouragement.
In Tribes, Billy meets Sylvia, a woman who is going deaf, and it is through his relationship with her that he realizes that though he has been speaking for years, he is only beginning to be heard.
The play by Nina Raine opened in 2010 to stellar reviews. “…bright and boldly provocative drama,” raved the Associated Press. “A smart, lively...play that asks us to hear how we hear, in silence as well as in speech,” said the NY Times.
The Actors Theatre production is directed by Evan Cabnet, who is making his Actors debut but has an extensive directorial history, including stints at The Goodman Theatre, Lincoln Center and on Broadway.
Performances of Tribes continue through December 7, with several special events occurring during the run:
