Julius Friedman is mainstay in the visual arts community of Kentucky. As a graphic designer, photographer, visual artist, co-owner of Chapman Friedman gallery and owner of the design firm IMAGES, his work has touched many facets of the visual arts scene for more than 20 years.
Friedman is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work with advertising and posters but his larger body of work has encompassed a wide-ranging series of explorations including furniture design, bookmaking, art installations, sculpture and photography.
This exhibition concentrates on a recent series of photographic works, many on show here for the first time. This body of work has been inspired by nature, time, and things found in the landscape including graffiti. The photographs, including two self-portraits, are presented in non-traditional ways – some mounted on aluminum panels and others as handing silk banners.
We will include a small selection of graphic works that Julius created for past exhibitions at the museum including an embossed and foil stamped poster for the Art of Healing and a delightful, irregular shaped poster made for the exhibition Going to the Dogs: Shelter for the Discerning Canine.
The exhibition is being mounted in conjunction with the recent publication of Julius Friedman: Images and Ideas published by Butler Books.
