Lunchtime Discussion: Coming of Age through the Eyes of Faith — Judaism
13th Annual Festival of Faiths
The Temple
5101 US Highway 42
Free and open to the public. Reservations required.
You are invited to join this Lunchtime Discussion with Rabbi Gaylia Rooks exploring the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the celebration of a 13-year old being accepted as an adult in the Jewish community. Participants will explore this profound coming of age rite during which the student leads the Hebrew and English of the Shabbat morning service, reads the weekly portion from the Torah (five books of Moses) and Haftarah (Prophets or Writings) and delivers a speech not only making their scriptural portions relevant to their lives, but also explaining why this life-cycle event is personally meaningful to them. We’ll look at how this ceremony helps to empower teenagers to become leaders in the Jewish community and to live out the values that have sustained the Jewish people throughout the generations. Bring your own lunch.
For reservations, please call the Temple at (502) 423-1818.
