About Me:
Juneteenth Legacy Theatre (JLT), Kentucky's only professional African American theatre company, presents the 10th annual Juneteenth Jamboree of New Plays, a festival of staged readings about the African American experience and its legacy, hosted by Actors Theatre, June 5 - 20. The festival highlight is a concert tribute to Black Broadway Musicals, June 13, with guest artist Grenoldo Frazier (who has collaborated and performed in Broadway productions including Your Arms Too Short to Box With God and Hello Dolly!) and directed by Obie winner and Tony committee member Sue Lawless. The festival also includes two musicals, Ethel Waters: His Eye Is On the Sparrow and Liar! Liar! A Moral Musical for Children.
The Jamboree is a forum for Kentucky writers. Four from Louisville—Muriel Wharton, Charlene Spalding, Gertrude Ena Woods and Brian Walker—and Elizabeth Orndorff, from Danville, serve up a mystery, family dramas and comedy.
A bio-drama about actress, Diana Sands, a courtroom drama based on a true incident in Little Rock, Arkansas, and a short work by JLT Co-Founder, Lorna Littleway round out the festival’s staged readings schedule.
The Jamboree kicks-off with a fundraiser, The Perfect 10: What’s Really On My Mind a celebration of new works by local activist, Aletha Fields to benefit JLT and Fairness. Three workshops on playwriting, characterization and Theatre of the Oppressed complete the activities.
