As of this writing, the Midwest is digging itself out of a massive snowstorm [4] while those of us in Louisville will be contending with slick roads for the morning commute. What this usually means is function over form takes over when it comes to dressing for the conditions. While this is understandable – everyone wants to be warm and dry after all – one needn’t have to forgo style while being cozy. Allow Louisville.com to show you how you can have it all when it comes to dreary weather, no matter the season.
Rain boots. They are the most important item to have on days like this, especially if you have to walk through an area with poor drainage to get to where you need to be. Some boots, like those sold by Hunter [5], Aigle [6] and others who make the classic Wellington boot, can be outfitted with socks for colder days. Others, like the rain/snow boots made by L.L. Bean [7], come with Thinsulate or shearling built into the boot. Either option will add a touch of style while protecting your toes – and your pants or leggings – from cold and wet environments.
The proper coat makes all the difference, and you can take on the upcoming trends for spring no matter if it’s raining or snowing. For example, if you were wanting to try black and white, this two-tone [8] piece would be a great start. And of course, add a bright pop of color – such as a headscarf or a turtleneck sweater underneath – to make the rest of the outfit stand out. If things are a bit chillier, puffer jackets and coats will keep you toasty without the need for fur. If you’re worried about resembling a certain French tire manufacturer’s mascot, look for puffers with quilted stitching [9] or thinner batting [10] to give you the results you desire.
As for accessories, merino, cashmere, shearling or fleece-lined gloves, hats and scarves are the best, while this umbrella will (literally) brighten up your day [11].
If you want to add to your rainy-day closet, Oxmoor Center [12], The Summit [13], Rodes [14] and The Pink Door [15] are just some of the places for your consideration. As always, dress for your body no matter what the trend du jour happens to be. All the best.
