In 2011, Skyscraper Stereo unapologetically blew onto the local music scene with their debut album “Homebois in Outer Space.” The album proved that the energetic and creative group (featuring local hip-hop artists Dat Boi Dunn, Mr. Goodbar, Chuck MF Deuce and DJ AK) was savvy with rhymes, top notch production and ear candy hooks that would dance in your head for days.
The group almost single handedly merged the local indie-rock scene with the local hip-hop scene, one of the few hip-hop groups that probably played more rock shows than hip-hop. Their rhymes and Beastie Boys-like cadence made them an immediate favorite not just among hip-hop lovers, but anyone who loved music.
This Friday, August 7 Skyscraper Stereo will be doing a show at New Vintage that will double as a crazy fun release party for follow-up album “Scrape Or Die.” Obviously the group will do tracks off its new album such as the latest single “That Ass Tho,” as well as some old fan favorites such as “Hoodrat Things.”
Skyscraper Stereo made a highlight cameo at Forecastle this year, coming out to perform with friend and sometimes-collaborator Dr. Dundiff during his set. They damn near stole the show out from under him. There’s no doubt they're going to bring it live this weekend as well, for they'll be debuting songs almost half-a-decade in the making; I'm sure they'll want their fans to know what they’ve been up to.
To top it all off, some surprise guest appearances have been promised, which always makes for a kick-ass show. It’s always exciting to hear fresh innovative voices in a genre like hip-hop that has fallen stagnant in the mainstream for far too long.
The “Scrape Or Die” release party will be August 7th at New Vintage. The show starts at 9 p.m., and tickets are still available for $10. Each ticket comes with a copy of the new “Scrape Or Die” CD at the door, and if you pre-ordered the album, you will receive free admission to the show.
