Kentucky’s Republican primary election for governor ended with Louisville businessman Matt Bevin in front of former Agricultural Commissioner James Comer by 83 votes.

Comer said late last night that he would request a recanvass through the Secretary of State’s office. A recanvass, unlike a recount, is just a review of the vote totals in each county. If a recanvass is requested, it would happen on May 28th.

Republican hopefuls Will T. Scott and Hal Heiner conceded early, and it appeared to be a decisive victory for Bevin. Comer surged ahead following returns in Western Kentucky leading to the near tie between Bevin and Comer.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and current Attorney General Jack Conway won an easy victory over Geoff Young, garnering 78 percent of the vote.  United States Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes also won her primary for Kentucky Secretary of State.

If Matt Bevin and Jack Conway are the candidates for governor, it will be the first governor from the city of Louisville since Lawrence Wetherby who served from 1950 to 1955.
