We all remember Patrick Henry Hughes. Louisville loves their local personalities, and Hughes is one of more seriously inspiring. Patrick Hughes was born with bilateral anophthalmia with pterygium syndrome and congenital bilateral hip dysplasia. In plain English: he was born without eyes and unable to walk. Growing up with a great love of music, Hughes excelled at piano and trumpet, playing the latter in the University of Louisville marching band starting in 2006. Many Louisvillians first heard of him back in 2008 when his family appeared on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." His fame led him to perform twice at the Grand Ole Opry; he has played onstage with prominent musicians such as Pam Tillis, Lonestar, and Faith Hill; and he has played solo trumpet with the Louisville Orchestra.
His story has inspired Louisvillians everywhere – including filmmaker Zach Meiners, whose film "I Am Potential [4]" will be playing at the Louisville Palace on July 9. "I Am Potential" is a Patrick Henry Hughes biopic, starring Jimmy Bellinger as Hughes. The film also stars Burgess Jenkins, Jama Williamson, and Judge Reinhold – with a cameo by Patrick Henry Hughes himself.
