Comedian and live comedy event producer, Janelle Fitzpatrick, is at it again with the annual Virgins and Old Whores Comedy Show at the Butchertown dance bar Play [4], Saturday, January 31. The show is a mixture of seasoned comedy veterans and newbies. The "old whores" of the shows have paid their dues on previous "virgin" shows, while the virgins are brand spankin' new to the comedy game.
Doing stand up comedy may seem terrifying to some, but it appears on a surprising amount of bucket lists. Most comedians get to listen to their doctors, lawyers, friends and other connections tell them a joke or two, and they have probably heard, "I've thought of doing stand up before." A few brave souls actually follow through by deciding to take the stage, though they may not be sure how. Fitzpatrick has been providing an opportunity for new comedians to jump on show for several years now, and this time they will be on stage alongside performers who have been in the game for quite some time.
This show will be headlined by Ally Bruener, a wheelchair-bound comedian who is known for her "I laughed at the crippled girl" t-shirts and stickers. One of my all time favorite jokes by Ally is, "I"m pretty sure God put me in a wheelchair because he knew I'd be unable to resist becoming a stripper." She also has a hilarious blog at www.allybruener.com [5] where you can read about everything from Barbie mutilations to some real Twitter gems.
The "virgin" performers come from a wide variety of professions. They include a teacher, school principal, case manager, auctioneer, restaurant manager, warehouse worker and a hair dresser.
If that doesn't sound like an equation for comedy, I don't know what is.
Admission is $7 at the door.
