We are a week away from Christmas, and the question is on everybody’s lips: “What did you get for [person] for Christmas?” Because apparently this is what Christmas is all about: buying stuff and receiving stuff. I’ll leave off on my commentary on this subject, but if you’re going to be buying, what better gift than the gift of books? People still read, right? Of course we do. My recommendation: head to McQuixote Books and Coffee [4] this weekend for one (or all!) of the following:
Tonight, December 19, meet local author Brenda Duffey. She will be present to read from and sign copies of her new novel, the historical fiction story The Peacemaker [5]. The story begins in 1720 and stretches across ten generations as they “struggle to restore the vision of the Peacemaker and end the continuing cycles of war and famine.” What is the Peacemaker? I could not find this information, but I’m sure if you show up at 6:00 you’ll find out.
Tomorrow, December 20, bring the teenagers to meet TR Lykins [6] and J Laslie [7]. Lykins writes “clean romance.” Her most recent book is entitled Sarah’s Premonition. Laslie, who writes young adult fiction, has recently released her book Persuading Tomorrow. They will both be at McQuixote at 4:00.
Return at 8:00 for the Winter Soul-Spit Slam: a winner-take-all (“all” meaning $125) poetry slam the likes of which have never been seen at this particular locale! The hosts boast “the best in Kentucky, St. Louis, Georgia, and beyond,” and if you think you are one of them, it is only $5 to slam.
Full details for all events can be found at the McQuixote Books & Coffee website [8]. McQuixote is located at 1512 Portland Avenue.
