Tim Kubel’s goal in the 87th minute lifted the University of Louisville men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Saint Louis in a second round NCAA Tournament match Sunday night at Lynn Stadium.

Kubel’s goal capped the Cardinals’ comeback from a 1-0 deficit, avenged a regular-season loss to the

Billikens

and earned

UofL

a spot in the third round (a.k.a. the Round of 16).

After a scoreless first half Saint Louis, which had defeated Louisville 1-0 Sept. 9, scored in the

68th

minute. The

Billikens’

lead didn’t last long, though, as Andrew Brody scored off a

Kubel

assist three minutes later. It remained deadlocked until

Kubel

beat Saint Louis keeper

Sascha

Otte

for the game-winner with less than 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Cards (11-7-3) will host the University of Maryland, Baltimore County at 6 p.m. next Sunday in a third-round match. The Retrievers upset No. 4 Maryland 1-0 Sunday night.

Here’s a look at what else happened in

UofL

sports over the weekend:

  • Senior point guard Chris Jones scored a game-high 18 points to lead five Cards in double figures as the men’s basketball team manhandled Marshall 85-67 Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center. Sophomore guard Terry Rozier added 17 and senior swingman Wayne Blackshear tallied 16 as UofL overcame an off-shooting night to derail the Thundering Herd. Louisville next hosts Savannah State at 7 p.m. Monday night as it continues play in the Global Sports Showcase.

  • Men’s cross country runners Edwin

    Kibichiy

    and

    Ernest

    Kibet

    finished

    23rd

    and

    32nd

, respectively, to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute,

    Ind

    .

    Kibichiy

    , a

    redshirt

sophomore, covered the 10,000-meter course in 30 minutes, 44.7 seconds while

    Kibet

, a junior, finished in 30:50.8. The Top 40 finishers earned All-American recognition.

  • The

    24th-ranked

football team, led by freshman quarterback Reggie

    Bonnafon’s

three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing), had a historic 31-28 win at Notre Dame on Saturday.

    UofL

(8-3) closes out its regular season at noon Saturday against

    archrival

Kentucky at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

  • The volleyball team dropped a pair of home ACC matches to ranked foes. No. 21 Duke swept

    UofL

3-0 Friday before seventh-ranked North Carolina clipped the Cards 3-1 Sunday at Cardinal Arena. In the Blue Devils’ 25-15, 25-12, 34-32 win sophomores Janelle Jenkins (11 kills, 14 digs) and Maya

    McClendon

(11 kills, 11 digs) had double-doubles for Louisville. Then in the Tar Heels’ 25-21, 20-25, 27-25, 26-24 triumph freshman Tess Clark tallied 16 kills and three blocks in a losing effort.

    UofL

(15-14, 7-10) closes out its regular season against Pittsburgh at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Cardinal Arena.

  • Freshman

    Mariya

Moore scored a game-high 22 points to lead the women’s basketball team to a 69-56 win over visiting Ball State on Sunday afternoon at the Yum! Center. Moore hit six 3-pointers as she matched her point total in the season-opener as

    UofL

won a battle of the Cardinals. Louisville (4-0), which is No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 12 in the AP poll, next hosts Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Yum! Center.

  • The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both were victorious in the

    UofL

Invite, which began Friday and concluded Sunday at Ralph Wright Natatorium. The men compiled 2,261 points to beat Western Kentucky, Missouri State, Connecticut, and Southern Illinois while the women tallied 1,872 to outscore

    WKU

    ,

    UConn

    , Missouri State and

    SIU

. The Cards will next compete in the USA Short Course Nationals Dec. 4-6 in Greensboro, N.C.
