Bit to Do [1]
By Erin Nevitt [3]

August doesn’t have to become the boring, hot, sweltering, dog days of summer for your family! It seems like August gets a bad rep, doesn’t it? It’s the long month at the end of a busy summer and the start of school and a down time everywhere. It seems to drag on and on as we embark on the waiting days until the start of a fresh new season. Have some fun this August and finish out summer with a bang!

1. FridayFest at Highview Park [4]

Fridays, August 8 (canceled notice on their Facebook page [5]) and August 22, 6-10pm

Friday night fun! That’s the night my family usually likes to try and do something together, and these events in the park in Okolona are really casual and have live music and great food trucks are usually there as well.

Located at Highview Park, 7201 Outer Loop

2. St. Joseph Orphans’ Picnic [6]

Saturday, August 9, 12-11pm

My family loves this picnic; it’s fun for everyone. Support the work this home does for children in our area.

Located at 2823 Frankfort Avenue

3. Moonlight Hike at Blackacre Conservancy and Nature Preserve [7]

Saturday, August 9, 8-10pm

Blackacre is our outdoor place to go for a walk through some trails, and this moonlit walk sounds great, especially if you have older kids. It’s $10 (for members) $15 (for non-members) per family.

Located at 3200 Tucker Station Road

4. Kentucky State Fair [8]

August 14-August 24, 9am-9pm daily

The State Fair is a must-see for families with kids of all ages. Check out Kentucky Kingdom while you’re visiting the fair this year.

Located at Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center

5. Summer Used Book Sale at Locust Grove [9]

August 22-24, 10am-3:30pm

Used books are a great way to find unique reads for your whole family. Support the work of this wonderful establishment in Louisville.

Located at 561 Blankenbaker Lane

6. African Heritage Festival [10]

Saturday, August 23, 11am-7pm

From the looks of their Facebook event photos from last year, this event looks spectacular!

Located at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage

7. IronMan Louisville [11]

Sunday, August 24, various times

Spectators can watch the IronMan events, and it’s a great chance to gather the whole family to cheer the participants on as they finish their competitions.

See online schedule of events here [12].

8. WFPK Waterfront Wednesday Concert [13]

Wednesday, August 27, 5pm-10pm

These last Wednesday of the month concerts at Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville are free and entertaining for a variety of ages.

Located at Waterfront Park, Big Four Lawn

9. F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop [14]

Friday, August 29, 6pm-10:30pm

The F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop is always a sure bet for fun around the Frankfort Avenue area. Grab some ice cream at Comfy Cow!

Located along Frankfort Avenue from Story Avenue to Cannons Lane

10. Family Palooza at Southeast Christian Church [15]

Monday, September 1, 11am-4pm

Round out the month at this free event full of family fun on Labor Day, the last hurrah of summer.
