By Michael J. Lambert [3]

Music Director Designate Teddy Abrams is beginning his tenure with the Louisville Orchestra with a bang!  The 2014-15 Classics series is almost here and features some of the best of orchestral music.  Here are some highlights from the first half of the season:

Fanfara

(September 6th, 2014)

First impressions are everything and Abrams must know that.  His inaugural concert with the Orchestra features an original work by the new Music Director as well as Mahler’s staggeringly beautiful Symphony No. 1 affectionately known as

Titan

.

Gershwin and Copland

(September 25th and 26th, 2014)

It’s a night of stage music that features soprano Storm Large in Kurt Weill’s ballet chanté

The Seven Deadly Sins

and pianist Kevin Cole in Gershwin’s oft-forgotten

New York Rhapsody

.

Carmina burana

(October 16th and 17th, 2014)

Abrams and the Orchestra team up with Chorusmaster Kent Hatteberg for a night of choral favorites by Ives, Monteverdi, Mozart and Bach.  The night ends with Orff’s imposing

Carmina burana

.  You might think you don’t know this one, but you do [4].

Sibelius Violin Concerto

(November 6th and 8th, 2014)

You do not want to miss violinist extraordinaire

Elmar

Oliveira in a performance of

Sibelius’

landmark Violin Concerto.  The only American violinist to win Gold at the Tchaikovsky Competition and the first violinist to be awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, Oliveira is a favorite on the international stage.  The night also includes Barber’s Essay No. 1 and

Mendelssohn’s

Scottish Symphony.

All performances are at Whitney Hall.  Times and ticket prices may vary.  More information can be found online here [5].
