Welcome to a new weekly column called Tuned Into Town. Each post will be recapping the Louisville music news over the past week. You will find concerts, new music, events, and more in this column. It will be a great place to find a lot of information about what's going on in the Louisville music scene. Let's get started!
Events:
- The Tim Faulkner Gallery is a space that’s full of cultural and artistic potential especially now that it is located in Portland avoiding the neighborhood situation they were in at their previous location in Butchertown. This Saturday’s event at their space is a great example of the space’s potential. It’s called More Dance. Less Hate. This free event, from 3-11 p.m. Saturday, will include a b-boys battle, a screening of the film Bboy for Life, a performance by JaLin Roze, dance lessons, food trucks, and other family friendly activities. A sort of theme for the event is a quote said by Bboy Cheeze from the film that will be shown: “What we want is more dance and less gangs.”
- Recently, a trend has started of bands packing up and hosting a cruise or island vacation to make up for the cold temperatures in the winter. Louisville’s own My Morning Jacket had their first “One Big Holiday” at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Mexico last year. It went so well they will be back again from January 31-March 4, 2015. Joining them this year will be Preservation Hall Jazz Band, War on Drugs, Dr. Dog, Dawes, Sylvan Esso and Biz Markie (as DJ). One Big Holiday is an all-inclusive event, offering meals, drinks, concerts and activities as part of the ticket price. It also includes a download code for each of My Morning Jacket's performances, and the hotel will also offer viewing parties for the Super Bowl, set to take place on the second day of the festival. Tickets for the event go on sale June 27th at noon, though returning guests can order pre-sale tickets one day earlier. There is also a five track compilation from last year’s event available for free download at nugs.net. [4]
Forecastle:
- Forecastle announced its final official after show on Wednesday and it just might be the most interesting. Taking place on Saturday, July 19 at Headliners will be the very interesting trio of 23 String Band, Matrimony, and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. This concert is sponsored by the Bluegrass Situation and Americana Music Association, two groups known to put together fantastic collaborations. Special guests are also advertised for the show. Forecastle says “This once-in-a-blue-moon concert is sure to be full of old favorites and new classics, with of course some Forecastle surprises in tow!” Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 on the day of the show. It’s for ages 18 and over. This show will be competing with another Forecastle after show headlined by Moon Taxi at Mercury Ballroom.
- OK Deejays, the DJ duo of Alex Bell and Aaron Chadwell, make their buzz around town playing dance and house music while hosting Night Visions with Sam Sneed on WFPK and groovin’ the dance floor at their mainstay, Zanzabar, as well as other places. They also have been booking some great shows recently. For example, they are bringing Nancy Whang (formerly of LCD Soundsystem) to Zanzabar. But this week, they said they have booked a fantastic Forecastle after show at the Rave Cave. If you are not familiar with the Rave Cave, that’s understandable because you have probably driven by it countless times and not noticed it. The Rave Cave is on Lexington Road just past Headliners Music Hall. It’s in the hill on the Headliner’s side of the street and you can see it by the unmarked green door.
Stay tuned for the show announcement as well as more Forecastle after shows. The already announced Forecastle after shows can be found here [5]
New Audio:
Louisville’s music/comedy/game show podcast Probably Not hosted by Alex Smith (of Howell Dawdy and Lydia Burrell) welcome local folk duo Twin Limb in the newest episode out this past Tuesday. It’s part hypothetical nonsense, part musical performance, and part “what just happening here?” Past guests include Jim James, The Pass, Discount Guns, The Deloreans, and members of Houndmouth. Most episodes run about 80 minutes—very recommended.
