2012 Leadership Louisville Luncheon at The Galt House The Leadership Louisville Center, in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, presents the 2012 Leadership Louisville Luncheon. With Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson as the keynote speaker, the theme of the day is "Quality of Place starts with Quality Leaders." This annual event connects hundreds of community leaders and will host the unveiling of Mayor Fischer's 25-year plan. Aug. 30 Pete Correale at The Improv One of the most requested acts in the comedy chains, Pete Correale was named by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top 10 comics to watch. You've seen him on The Tonight Show, David Letterman, and on the Comedy Central special The Things We Do For Love. Aug. 30-Sept. 2 Louisville Trivia Pub Quiz at DiOrio's Bring your friends. Andy Warhol: Myths at the Speed Art Museum From the 1960s on, Warhol exhibited an unerring sense for the powerful motifs of his time—contemporary images that capture the modern imagination as completely as the gods and goddesses of ancient mythology once did. In Myths, Warhol's 1981 portfolio of 10 screenprints, he was referring not to remote civilizations, but to the beginnings of the cinema and the imaginary characters loved and recognized by millions all over the world. Most images in Warhol's Myths series are taken from old Hollywood films or 1950s television and portray the universal view of America's once enchanted and powerful past. Included in the series are characters loved by children such as Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Santa Claus, as well as fictional figures like Dracula, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Uncle Sam. Aug. 31-Sept. 16 Kentucky Flea Market Labor Day Spectacular 2012 at the Kentucky Expo Center More than 1,200 booths of jewelry, crafts, candles, overstock, grocery items, antiques, collectibles, furniture and more. Aug. 31-Sept. 3 Kentucky Bluegrass Music & Burgoo Festival at the Water Tower The Kentucky Bluegrass Music & Burgoo Festival is the Kentucky-style recipe for the perfect summer send-off. There's no better place to experience bluegrass music than in Kentucky's own back yard. Enjoy live bands from around the country as you indulge in traditional Kentucky burgoo made from mouthwatering cuts of meat and vegetables. Sept. 1-3
WorldFest 2012 at the Belvedere Located in Downtown Louisville on the Belvedere, WorldFest hosts the largest gathering of local ethnic restaurants, vendors and exhibitors at any one event in the state of Kentucky. This event is an opportunity to become more familiar with the international community while honoring the traditions of our past and our future. With at least 90 languages spoken in the Louisville public schools and 50 percent of the city’s population growth over the past 15 years coming from international residents, Louisville is more culturally diverse than ever before. Aug. 31-Sept. 2 51st Annual Championship Cat Show at the Kentucky Expo Center Cats from all around compete for the championship prize. Sept. 1-2 Outdoor Skills—Orienteering I at Jefferson Memorial Forest This program equips participants with the skills necessary to read and interpret topographic maps and locate destinations. This in-field set of exercises is truly a hands-on learning experience. Ages 12 and up. Program meets in the Horine Reservation. Sept. 1, 9 a.m.
Storybook Character Day at the Louisville Zoo Imagination comes to life when children of all ages meet some of their favorite storybook characters throughout the zoo. Bring your camera. Characters include Curious George, the Man in the Yellow Hat, Llama Llama, Lyle Lyle Crocodile and Clifford. Special guess Larry and Bob from Veggie Tales. Sept. 1-2, 12-4 p.m. Louisville Bats host the Indianapolis Indians at Louisville Slugger Field Come support the hometown team in its last series of the season. Sept. 2, 7:05 p.m. Matt Bergman featuring Kelly Collette with Anthony Mattingly at Comedy Caravan Bergman has been performing at clubs and colleges since he was in college pursuing a degree in criminal justice. After graduating, he realized he was afraid of criminals and decided stand up comedy was the way to go. Aug. 30-Sept. 2 ***MONDAY—BONUS LABOR DAY EVENTS*** Belle of Louisville Labor Day Picnic Cruise With the fall coming on and students heading back to school, it's a nice time to bring the whole family on an end-of-the-summer cruise on the historic steamboat Belle of Louisville. Include the delicious buffet lunch, if you like (advance reservations are required), or come on for sightseeing only and have a great afternoon on the Ohio River. Call for information or reservations. Online reservations are now available too. Sept. 3 11:30 a.m. Street Ruckus featuring Dan Deacon on West Main Street Headlining the event will be Dan Deacon. Other acts include Height with Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, Alan Resnick, and Tomasyamaha. This concert coincides with the upcoming August 27 release of Dan Deacon’s new album, America. A variety of local food trucks will be participating also. sickets will also be available at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Main Street Association for renovation of Fort Nelson Park at Seventh and Main Streets. Rain or shine. No outside food, drink or alcohol. Sept. 3, 4-10 p.m.
