I’ve lived in Louisville for almost a year now, and I’m finally finding my way around town. I know what routes to take when traffic is horrid, and I’ve started to find my favorite places in the area. Despite my occasional confidence in knowing where I am, I still find myself surprised on a regular basis by the things in Louisville I know nothing about - take
Highland Morning on Bardstown Road for example. I’ve driven by almost daily, and yet I hadn't - until Friday - set foot inside. Now I’m wondering why I hadn’t done so sooner.
I had an amazing omelet - tomato, feta, and basil to be exact. It came with a biscuit and a side of the best grits I’ve ever had in my life. I know I’m not from down south, but four years in the Army gave me my fill of grits - then again, maybe I shouldn’t judge grits by the version cooked up by the U.S. Government. Either way, they were amazing.
The mind-bending feature of the meal wasn’t my eye-opening grit experience, though. It was the lemon pancakes my girlfriend ordered. They were huge. Scratch that, they were monstrous. When I say these pancakes filled a plate, I’m not joking. They were easily larger than a foot in diameter, and were smothered in blueberries and vanilla custard. When they came to the table, I wasn’t sure what to think. My mind literally went blank at the sheer size of them - no plate to be seen. And the flavor? Wow. She might have only made it a quarter of the way through them (she was served two of the beasts), but they were amazing.
If you haven’t been to breakfast at Highland Morning, I would highly recommend it. I haven’t been to too many breakfast joints in town, but this one is close to home, affordable, staffed with friendly people, and serves some amazing food.
