Citizens of the Louisville community plan to come together on Sunday, January 26 at Holy Trinity School to help a Louisville infant in her fight against cancer. Hadley Mercer is a 8-month old Louisville girl suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia, who needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life.
Hadley was diagnosed with AML on December 2, 2013. After a trip to the emergency room, “Her symptoms in three days went from, 'OK, this is a little odd.' to 'Oh my gosh, she is so sick,'" Hadley’s mom, Ashlie Mercer said. Now after undergoing two rounds of chemotherapy, Doctors at Kosair’s Children’s Hospital said a bone marrow transplant is a essential. A bone marrow transplant is the next step after a lack of response to traditional chemotherapy to save Hadley’s life.
Finding a bone marrow match is the next obstacle in this little girl’s life. Although Hadley’s two older sisters are a match for each other, they are not a match for Hadley. Mercer said, “We are going to find a match and it's going to be a long road, take some time and it's a lot of adjustment from our whole family. If we don't look at it like that, we would never get through it.”
Holy Trinity is hosting a bone marrow drive on Sunday in the school lobby, at 501 Cherrywood Road, Louisville, KY 40204. The drive will start at noon and end at 5pm this Sunday. A simple,quick cheek swab has the potential to save a life and help The Fighter, as Hadley is called, win her fight against cancer.
