Saturday marked the debut of a new trolley service in South Louisville along New Cut Road and Southern Parkway [4] between Churchill Downs [5] and Jefferson Memorial Forest [6]. The service is an extension of the previous trolley hop, which began running monthly between July 2012 and May 2013 from Iroquois Park to the municipal urban forest, the largest in the United States.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., riders could board at marked points along the route to explore the many attractions, shops and restaurants in the area. Major attractions included the Kentucky Derby Museum [7], which offered two-for-one admission to the first 150 riders, Iroquois Park, The Little Loomhouse [8] on Kenwood Hill Road – where the first time “Happy Birthday to You” was sung by the Hill sisters Patty and Mildred – the Fairdale Library [9], and Jefferson Memorial Forest.
The trolley hop was organized by the Auburndale Neighborhood Association [10] with the help of TARC [11] and a Louisville Metro Council Neighborhood Development Fund grant organized by Metro Councilwoman Vicki Welch [12], whose district covers Fairdale and the Jefferson Memorial Forest.
The hop will continue monthly through the summer and fall, with the next trolley service scheduled for Saturday, August 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
