Messy Afternoons at the Louisville Science Center Messy Afternoons are filled with sloppy, icky, gunky and gooey activities intended to introduce young learners to science concepts and tools, and foster the innate curiosity of young and old alike. Program offerings change each week, so your little ones will never get bored. Activities are open to children ages 7 and younger and their families. May 24, 12–4 p.m. Abbey Road on the River 2012 This year marks the 11th for North America’s largest and longest running Beatles tribute festival. More than 60 bands will return to Louisville during the signature Memorial Day weekend event, bringing five days of peace, love and rock n' roll to the Belvedere and Galt House Hotel & Suites. Jefferson Starship will headline the 2012 festival. May 24-28 Art21 Season 6 screening Who and what limits our freedom of expression? In what ways do cultural differences affect our understanding of art and other forms of communication? How do an artist’s process and choice of medium affect our perception of his or her work? This episode features artists who synthesize disparate aesthetic traditions, present taboo subject matter, discover innovative uses of media, and explore the shape-shifting potential of the human figure. Free beverages and snacks. May 24, 6–8 p.m.
Live racing and Paddock Concert Series with The Black Lillies at Churchill Downs The Black Lillies will take the stage with their unique blend of country, roots and blues. Admission gates open at 1:30 p.m. and the first race will be 2:45 p.m. ET. Happy hour drink specials include $3 Stella draft beer from 4-7 p.m. in the paddock area. The featured performance is expected around 8:15 p.m. and each postrace concert will last approximately 90 minutes. The first 850 people in attendance for the concert will be allowed access into the saddling paddock to watch the concert up close in a VIP Watch Area free of charge. May 25, 1:30-11 p.m. F.A.T. Friday Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop On the Final Friday of the month, park at one of the many convenient FREE and Public Parking areas, board the Frankfort Avenue Trolley at any designated stop between 6:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., and let the fun begin! Includes great shopping, dining and entertainment! Click on the Url website for the event to see all of the pickup locations for the trolley. May 25, 6-10:30 p.m. Movie night at The Parklands Come splash and play at The Creekside Playground and Sprayground then relax with popcorn and a screening of Dolphin Tale starting.This fun, family event is free and open to the public. Go Go Amy's "How to be a Pinup Girl" Workshop returns to Boudoir Louisville The lovely Go Go Amy from The Pretty Things Peepshow will be dropping by the Boudoir Louisville studio teach her world famous Pinup Girl Class! Have you ever dreamed of being a vintage pin up girl? Well now you can transform into the vintage vixen you've always wanted to be. This body-positive experience insists that true glamor has no height, size or age requirement. You will learn the history of pin up, posing tips and get a hair and make up demonstration. Then you will be able to test what you have learned with a fabulous photo shoot. You will leave with a book that includes all the details about the information you have learned in the class complete with a resource guide to help you figure out your next steps in your life as a pin-up model. Bring a few of your favorite pinup or Old Hollywood style bombshell outfits along with you. As soon as you are finished with hair and makeup, we begin snapping pinup photos of you. May 26, 1-7 p.m. Southern Indiana Uncorked! This annual festival now in its fifth year features regional wineries and breweries, artists, and musicians. Admission includes entry to the festival, a souvenir tasting glass and free sampling. Proceeds from the festival benefit Habitat for Humanity of Harrison County. Advance tickets are $10 and available to the first 500 at Cellar on the Square (110 Elm Street, Corydon). Discounts for designated drivers. May 26 Kentucky Reggae Festival at the Water Tower Starving for summer? Kick off the season with the flavor of the islands at the Kentucky Reggae Festival. Come enjoy a Caribbean atmosphere of live reggae music, ethnic food and the Caribbean vendor market. The Kentucky Reggae Festival, brings a truly Caribbean atmosphere to Louisville’s backyard without the expense of traveling to the islands. May 26–28
The Declaration of Independence: The Stone Copy and the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio Beginning Memorial Day weekend, visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to see a rare 1823 engraved facsimile of the Declaration of Independence. The document was donated to Jefferson County in 1986 by William P. Mulloy & Sons. Complementing the display of this historic document will be works by contemporary artists that represent the rich diversity of American art and reflects a variety of aesthetic styles and art movements, from pop art to photo-realism. May 26–July 15 Louisville Bats Home Game at Louisville Slugger Field Cheer on the Louisville Bats as they play a home game at Louisville Slugger Field against the Indianapolis Indians. May 27, 6:05 p.m. The As Yet Unnamed Theatre Presents "The Drowsy Chaperone" It all begins when a diehard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find and keep, her true love. And of course, there's the Chaperone. Through May 27 ***Monday, Memorial Day bonus listings*** Kentucky Flea Market at the Kentucky Expo Center The Kentucky Flea Market features more than 700 booths of jewelry, crafts, candles, overstock, grocery items, antiques, collectibles, furniture and more. For over 37 years, the Kentucky Flea Market has been a fixture at the Kentucky Expo Center. May 25–28 Mayor's Healthy Hometown Hike, Bike & Paddle Bring the family for this free Healthy Hometown event. The Hike, Bike and Paddle takes place at the top of Waterfront Park's Great Lawn at E. Witherspoon Street near the dancing fountain. Parking is available in many areas around Waterfront Park. May 28, 7:30–10 a.m. |
